Guidance Office News

Parent Newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 7

April 1, 2008

Report cards will be distributed Tuesday, April 1, 2008.  Please review the academic policies in the 2007-2008 handbook regarding summer school and graduation requirements, both middle and high school.

Senior parents, please encourage your student to finish the year with a good final report card.  College acceptances are conditional and can be revoked if the final transcript is poor.

Senior Parents/Guardians are reminded:

§          All scholarships and college grants appear in the graduation booklet but we REQUIRE a photocopy.  We will be glad to photo award letters.
§          There are many scholarships still available.  Have your senior check the latest bulletin in homeroom, stop in the guidance office, or check
on–line at the CCHS web site.
§          Seniors should notify each college they applied to of their final decision, thanking the college for their time and consideration.
§          All transcript fees must be paid in order to receive the April report card.   All seniors owing fees received a notice last week.

Junior Parents

Siena College will be hosting a “Jump-start Your College Search” program for juniors on Sunday, April 6 at the college.  A list of topics and registration form is online at  www.siena.edu/admissions/jrjumpstartregistration/ or call  1-888-AT-SIENA.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute conducts many summer enrichment programs and sports camps for students of all ages.  Visit http://summer.rpi.edu for more information.

It is recommended that all juniors take the SAT  I at CCHS on Saturday,  May 3, 2008.  The registration deadline is Tuesday, April 1, 2008.    Students can register on-line at www.collegeboard.com.

It is strongly recommended that all students who are considering math, science, computer science, or engineering as careers or plan to apply to very competitive colleges take the required SAT II Subject Tests.  The SAT II subjects tests cannot be taken by a student on the same date they take the SAT I.  Juniors wishing to take SAT IIs can do so on June 7, 2008.  The SAT IIs are given at various local high schools.  The application deadline is Tuesday, May 6, 2008.  Your student can register on-line at www.collegeboard.com.

There are still openings in the SAT Prep Course to be held at CCHS on April 21, 23, 28 and 30.  Juniors can reserve a place by paying the $110 fee in the guidance office as soon as possible.  This course usually fills up quickly.

Guidance has purchased three new DVDs designed to help students prepare for the math section of the SAT.  Students are free to use them in the guidance office during a study hall or activity period.

Juniors should also consider taking the ACT exam, especially students who are interested in studying math and science in college.  The ACT is offered on June 14, 2008.  The application deadline is May 9, 2008.  Log onto www.actstudent.org to apply.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008, marks the 2008 Spring College Fair at the HVCC McDonough Sports Complex Field House Troy.  Sophomore and Junior parents, this is an opportunity for your student to begin his/her college selection process.

It is an excellent chance to speak with representatives from over 200 nationally recognized colleges and universities.  Two-year and four-year institutions will be represented.  You will have a chance to ask questions about programs of study, college life, tuition and financial aid.  The session runs from 6:00—8:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL NOT BE RELEASING ANY STUDENT TO ATTEND THE DAYTIME SESSION!

Scheduling for next year’s courses is just about complete.  Please make sure your review your student’s choices, fill out and sign all three forms and return to your student’s counselor within three days.  Do not hesitate to call the counselor if there are any questions (235-7100 x 2).
