Questions for a College Admissions Counselor

When speaking with a college representative either here or at the college fair, you should develop a list of questions that you can ask the counselor.   This list be a good tool for comparing schools.  Suggestions for questions you may want to ask are below:

1.                1.  What are the admissions requirements?
       2.  What is the admissions policy (deadline, rolling etc.)?
       3.  How many students attend the college?
       4.  What is the student/faculty ratio?
       5.  What is the average class size?
       6.  How many students live on campus?
       7.  How many students commute to school?
       8.  Regardless of academic major, what other courses are required?
       9.  Is a change of major permitted after the first year?
     10.  Are there internships available?
     11.  How much is tuition?
     12.  How much is room & board?
     13.  What types of financial aid are available?
     14.  How many students receive financial aid?
     15.  Is the location of the school rural, urban or suburban?
     16.  Is there public transportation available?
     17.  Is the school on a semester system?
     18.  Is there housing available for students  who want to live on campus?  All four years?   
     19.  How may students live in a dormitory room?
     20.  What meals plans are offered?
     21.  Is there a cafeteria for commuting students?
     22.  What type of social, cultural, academic & athletic activities are available?
     23.  Does the school have a Counseling Center?
     24.  Does the school have a Placement Office?
     25.  Does this school give credit for AP examinations?

     26. Are there academic or athletic scholarships available?
     27.    What percentage of freshmen return for the second year? 

FINANCIAL PLANNING

 REMINDER—CCHS will host its annual college financial planning night on Wednesday, November 14, 7 PM in the Library.  It is strongly recommended that you and your parents attend this informative meeting.

NCAA Forms

REMINDER—If you intend to play sports in college (or even think you might like to), you should register with the NCAA.  This must be done on-line at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.  Be careful to print out the release forms and submit them to the guidance office.  See your counselor if you have any questions.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

It is recommended that all college applications be submitted prior to Thanksgiving break.  Now is the best time to process applications—before the rush!  During the rush period, the turn around time in the Guidance office can be ten days, so plan ahead.Do not wait for letters of recommendation or SAT scores to mail your applications.

SAT I, SAT II and ACT

Today, October 2, 2007, is the registration  deadline for the SAT I and SAT II to be given November 3 at CCHS.   If you plan to take or retake the SAT I or SAT II, please apply online at  www.collegeboard.com.   The SAT I and SAT II are also offered December 1 at several area high schools.  The registration deadline for the December test is Tuesday, October 30.

 If you are applying to a very competitive college or university, they may require the SAT IIs. Check with your counselor today if you have any questions.

SAT Prep Course—  CCHS will host a SAT Prep Course on October 15, 17, 22, and 24, 3pm to 6 pm at a cost of $110.  Reserve your seat now by paying the fee in the guidance office.  This class fills up quickly!

College Visits,  Interviews- Reminder—Days off for seniors:  October 8,  and November 12 are good days to schedule college visits, interviews, etc.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Information is available in the guidance office regarding the following scholarships.  Stop in today if you are interested.

Unity College in Maine:  Women Environmental Leadership Scholarship.  You must be nominated by your counselor.

Veterans of Lansingburgh Scholarship—scholarship awarded to a senior whose a child or grandchild of a veteran.  Deadline:  4/15/08.

AT&T and the Better Business Bureau Science and Technology Scholarship—awarded to a student who is interested in pursuing a degree in the fields of technology and/or science.  Deadline:  1/10/08
